PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARIES
The Presidential Libraries Act of 1955 established a system of privately erected and federally maintained libraries, which is now comprised of 13 Presidential Libraries. Beginning with Franklin Roosevelt, presidents privately raise funds to design and build a facility to house artifacts and documents from their administration. Once the building is complete it is maintained by the National Archives Department. These libraries are much more than traditional libraries - they are often architectural masterpieces, museums, theaters and research centers. Often on the same grounds are the President's birthplace, boyhood home or final resting place.
